The Most Important Digit?
I'm back at the keyboard. Finally. I've received many emails asking what has happened to Dave's Weekly Feed. After all, it's been a few weeks since there has been a posting. Well, here's the story. A couple weeks ago I was skiing out at Breckenridge when my buddy Mike and I decided to take a little venture up "6 Chair." This is a chair that takes you up to some great black diamond runs on the back side of Peak 8. Or is it Peak 9? Honestly, I can't remember and it doesn't make a lot of difference what peak it was. A lot of the locals told us to stay away from that area as there had not been any fresh snow and the conditions there were "dust over crust" as they say. But what the hell, I talked Mike into going up there. Our first run down was no problem. Lots of bumps but no real problems. So we ventured up again. This time down we took another route. I must have ended up on an ice field without realizing it. I went to turn and something happened to my balance and I took a fall. Ordinarily this would not be a problem but guess what hit the ground first and absorbed all of my weight? Yes, you guessed it... MY THUMB!!! OUCH!!! It does not exactly tickle when one falls straight down on his THUMB. Then what does an idiot do??? Goes in and puts ice on the injury? Goes to the hospital? No... he gets up and keeps skiing. It wasn't until the next day that I realized this thing hurt pretty damn bad. So did I take the day off? No, of course not. It was the last day of skiing for a while so I skied!
I figured the injury was no big deal and it would be better in a couple of days. WRONG. This thing really hurt. When I got home I did a lot of research on the internet (my favorite doctor) and found that the most common skiing injuries were those of the thumb and wrist. Yeah, we only hear about the people crashing into trees and dying. And people breaking legs. No one talks about the people walking around for weeks with painful thumbs. It's just not interesting.
So here I was, trying all kinds of ways to tape up my thumb that I learned on the internet. It helped a little but the tape was so damn uncomfortable, I would normally rip it off by lunchtime. Every time I went to write or type, my thumb reminded me I should not be using it. So I had to take it easy.
Day by day it began to feel better. Today it is almost feeling normal, except when I try to do certain things like try to lift a dumbell. Ouch, that is still impossible. I'm hoping this is not a permanent injury. You'll never realize how important your thumb is until you can't use it. I guarantee that.
Anyway, I really felt bad about not keeping up with Dave's Weekly Feed and I'm very glad to announce that "I'm BACK!!!" So stay tuned because there is some really cool stuff coming very soon to DWF!!!!
