My Personal Story

To this day I’m not quite sure how I did it, but when I opened my practice I experienced some great initial growth. I began expanding by adding a couple of new rooms, and, of course, all of the necessities that went along with them. It wasn’t long before I had a very busy practice.

A short time later for reasons that I still cannot explain, things started slowing down. I began seeing holes in my schedule. I figured if I just stepped up my advertising campaigns, everything would come back. But it wasn’t so easy this time. I sunk more money into marketing, but nothing was working. More and more holes were appearing in my schedule.  

I started using money that I didn’t have to try to market my practice. The results were still the same: dismal. By this time I was getting very scared. I tried my best not to show it on the outside, but deep down inside I was frightened to death. How could a young guy like me with a young family be virtually a paycheck or two away from complete financial collapse? 

I would have bad dreams of what might happen to me if things didn’t turn around quickly. I felt I was living a double life. At work I was juggling bills around, trying to figure out who had to be paid and who could be put off. At home I kept a smile on my face pretending everything was OK.  I was totally stressed out all of the time. I honestly didn’t know what to do with myself.

 

The Turning Point

I can still remember the day I was sitting at my desk during a morning that I had zero patients. As I was watching my practice go down the drain, I looked up at the little plaque I had on my desk that read “NEVER QUIT!” An insignificant plaque that I had bought at a yard sale may have been the impetus for what I am about to describe to you.  

Let me first explain something. I had always considered myself smart in some areas, but never did I think English skills or writing were my strong points. It’s strange how when my life actually depended on it, I was able to sit down and actually create a “special letter” that I would send to people in my community. I was very confident that this “special letter” would end all of my problems.

It was crazy to waste money trying to get anyone other than people living very close to my office to become my patients.
