Wow, we are glad to see so many of our dental friends finally starting to jump into Social Media for their practices. As we have been saying for quite some time now, if you ignore this medium, you could potentially be missing out on the most powerful way to market and communicate with people in your area that we have EVER seen in our lives!
As excited as we are that you are becoming involved with Social Media, we are here to make sure that you are doing it correctly. One of the biggest mistakes we have been noticing is in the way some of you are setting up your dental Facebook page. Let’s talk about it for just a second because if you are doing this, you need to make a change immediately!
As you know, in order to build a Facebook business page, you must start with a foundation of a Facebook personal profile. It is up to you whether or not your personal profile page is ever used or not. But every business page needs to be connected to a personal profile. And don’t worry… no one will ever be able to see your personal information (unless you want them to, but that is a discussion for another time).
The mistake we are seeing is that some of you are asking someone on your dental team to create your Facebook page for you and what they are doing is using THEIR OWN personal Facebook profile as the starting point. This is extremely dangerous and we are warning you not to let this ever happen.
The reason? Facebook business pages are NEVER transferable. So if a situation should ever change with your well-meaning team member (as in she leaves your employ), she will be in complete control of not only your business page, but all of the patients, friends and neighbors that you have spent a lot of time getting to visit and “like” your page. You will havenothing and will be forced to start from scratch. And not only that, if the departure was due to bad circumstances (such as a firing or a lay-off, etc), the now ex-team member would be able to wreak havoc with your patients if she chose to do so!
Sure, this article may upset some well meaning team members, but even so, please realize the danger in the doctor simply leaving this ownership in the hands of a team member. It would be the equivalent of letting one of your team members own your website domain name (yourdentalsite.com). Would you ever do that? We don’t think so.
Please understand, this is a big NO-NO! It is absolutely not meant to be a “dis” to any well meaning team member. We simply want to prevent a problem before it occurs.
