Who Does This In Your Practice?

We all know that patients don’t judge your practice by the integrity of your crown margins.

Things like running on time, the friendliness of the doctor and team, and even sparkling clean bathrooms go a long way in providing your patients with confidence that they are in the right place.

So who cleans your bathroom?

There is only one correct answer to this question, and that is:

No member of the team, including the doctor, should ever walk out of the patient rest room without it being cleaner that it was when they walked in – and fully stocked with supplies as well.

The same goes for every area of your practice. If there is a misplaced item, trash on the floor, a stain or water droplet that needs to be wiped up – don’t wait for someone else to take care of it. And worst of all – never under any circumstances utter the phrase “it’s not my job!!”

Even if you have a cleaning crew that visits every night, keeping the office clean and spiffy looking is the job of every single person in there and it is a never ending one.

And speaking of spiffy looking – no one should ever have food and drink anywhere where a patient can see it. That’s right – no soda cans or Big Gulp cups at the front desk and no snacks anywhere! That kind of stuff should only be in an area that is completely off limit to patients.

Today’s message is a simple yet important one. So start today!!

What Do Black Friday and Your Dental Office Have in Common?

It’s Black Friday!

Question: What do Black Friday and dentistry have in common?

Answer: Some people are afraid to get involved because of intense anxiety!

Yes, anxious dental patients are everywhere. No matter how gentle of a dentist you may be, there are people literally scared to death to sit in your chair. Often they only see the dentist in an emergency situation such as a dental abscess or toothache which only intensifies their fear of the dentist.

So how do you cater to this population of people? According to www.dentalfear.com, nearly as many as 50% of the U.S. population does not get regular dental care, most of which is due to fear.  And that’s huge!

More and more dentists are using oral and IV sedation. Hypnosis is growing in popularity. Why? They help the fearful patient. Supposedly there is an office in Texas which offers beer and wine in their reception area! And even though we are not recommending this “strategy,” their practice is growing like crazy!

How much could your practice grow by marketing to fearful patients? What if you added the following questions to your new patient form?

1.)    Are you afraid of the dentist? Why?
2.)    What would make your dental experience more comfortable?

You may be surprised at the answers!

Why not make your dental practice the one that the frightened patients brag about? By making simple changes, you could entice many more people through your door and make their dental (and mental) experiences much better.

Have a great Black Friday! Hopefully you will be doing something other than going to “the mall!”

When “Plaque” Friday Comes!

When Black Friday comes I’ll stand down by the door
And catch all the grey men as they dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes I’ll collect everything I’m owed
And before my friends find out I’ll be on the road

When Black Friday falls you know it’s got to be
Don’t let it fall on me.

As many of you may know, these are lyrics from the 1975 song “Black Friday” by Steely Dan. It ia a great album and if you don’t have it, you may easily go here to sample it and/or download it. Especially give the first song “Black Friday” a listen!

For many years, Black Friday has been referred to by dentists as “Plaque Friday.” The reason? Patients are spending their money on gifts and such and are neglecting putting money aside for their own dental health. So what happens is that they are not able to get the proper dental care until after the infamous “first of the year.” And even then, many are still deep in credit card debt and dental treatment is not first on their list.

Want to blow your patients away with a GREAT Thanksgiving letter? The creative geniuses at The Madow Group have come up with it RIGHT HERE.  Please modify it for your practice and schedule it to go out via email to your entire patient base today or tomorrow. The letter is designed to create a ton of awareness with your patients and keep you and your team very busy through the end of this year and more! If you do not know how to do this, you DEFINITELY need to be taking The Best Social Media Conference EVER at our Institute! Call us at 1-888-88-MADOW and we can help you sign up and get ready for 2012!

Remember, when “Plaque Friday” comes, you can make sure your patients are ready to get their dental treatment done by the end of the year! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Please be safe and enjoy your time with your family and friends

Give Thanks – But Don’t Do This!

Thanksgiving is in just two days, then Black Friday and the holiday season.

It’s a time to count your blessings, be considerate of others and be charitable. (Actually, we should be doing that year-round, but that’s a different topic altogether.)

But as you get into that spirit, please don’t forget that you have a business to run which is called a dental practice. The doctor and every team member are responsible for its success.

So – if you start discounting your work, not collecting what you are owed, and giving reduced fees to everyone with a crazy story – you will be undermining that business.

Charity is great – even required in some ways. But it needs to be on your terms.

It’s great to help the unfortunate in your community. But if you start to give discounts to everyone or fail to collect what is owed to you, you are undervaluing your work and eventually cheating yourself and your team.

So please do lots of charity. Pick some patients who are unfortunate and provide free or low-cost treatment. Do a “Dentistry From The Heart” event. Donate your time to a local free clinic. But also remember not to get screwed by patients who are trying to take advantage of your generosity. Then you will really have a practice to be thankful for!!

This Might Be Fun…

One of the major gripes we get when consulting one-on-one with dental practices is simply:

“There is poor communication between the front and the back…” or a business team member saying “If only the dental assistants would understand and appreciate my job more…” and vice versa.

Yes – sometimes there is a dichotomy between the clinical and business teams, and that is never good. Much of this could be alleviated if the members of the team simply understood and appreciated each other’s jobs. It’s even better if they express that appreciation.

So let’s have the team members who are reading this do an experiment today. Go up to someone on “the other side” and simply say –

“I just want to let you know that I really appreciate what you do for the office. We certainly couldn’t run this place without you.”

It sounds corny – but just try it! After you pick then up off the floor, control their laughter, and possibly dry their tears, you will find yourself taking a huge step towards having a better practice and enjoying your job more.

Collect more than dust!

Does your dental practice have a lot of outstanding money owed to you?  We’re finding that patients are having difficulty paying on time with so many other bills to pay.  Although these are tough financial times, you are still running a business, which includes paying your own expenses to keep your business going.
We ALWAYS say this, and we’ll keep saying it:  NO LONGER SHOULD YOU ACT AS A BANK!  Please let the professionals, such as Care Credit, take care of your patient financing.
But if you’re still in need of ways to collect patient balances, here’s an idea to try.  Compose a letter to your patients with overdue accounts letting them know you would like to extend them a courtesy due to the tough economic times.  You will deduct 10% from their entire bill if they pay everything by the end of the month.
Your patients don’t want to owe you money, so if you give them this incentive, many of them will want to settle up.  This could mean a lot of money coming into your practice in one month!
If this doesn’t work and you are finding it impossible to collect, you may want to consider a form that has been working very well in this economy.  Click HERE for more information.

What Are The Odds?

Many years ago, two teenagers met in the working class city of Liverpool, England. Among their many incredible accomplishments, the one named Paul would soon write a song called “Yesterday” and the one named John would write “Imagine.”

These two songs are considered by many to be the finest pop songs ever written.

What are the odds of this happening? A billion to one? A zillion to one? Possibly higher.

What are the odds of your exact dental office team being assembled? A million to one? Probably higher.

And while your office team may not be McCartney and Lennon, they are extremely important to the health of the practice. Just like great artists, the team needs to work well together and be able to achieve individually. They need to be nurtured, rewarded, praised and given the chance to grow. And if they are given the proper opportunity and can’t flourish – they need to be “Pete Best-ed.”

Remember – the dental office team is a unique group of people. Nowhere else on Earth is there a group like them. Take every possible occasion to make the best team possible, and they (along with your practice) will rise to the top of the charts.
