You Have A Problem

So – you take your car in for the 40,000 mile checkup and a few hours later get a call that goes something like this:

“Good news Miss Grindall, everything’s in great shape…….except the water pump is leaking. Fixing it today will prevent the engine from overheating in the future. It will be six hundred dollars.”

What is the first thing you are thinking?

“Wow – I brought my car in for an oil change and now they’re telling me it’s gonna be six hundred more bucks? Does it really need a new water pump? Are they just trying to rip me off or fill some sales quota? What should I do?”

The mechanic offers to put it up on the lift to show you the leak – but let’s face it, you may as well be looking at the inside of the Apollo 11. So what do you do? It all comes down to trust.

A similar scenario takes place in your dental practice every day. Someone comes in for a hygiene visit and they walk out thinking…

“Wow – I just went in for a cleaning – it’s not like anything hurt. And now they are telling me I need an eight hundred dollar filling!”

Once again it all comes down to trust.

It’s all of the things you have done BEFORE this appointment took place that come into play now. Have you worked with human nature, bonded with the patient and made them feel special? Or do they feel like they are a nameless nobody in a dental factory? Everything you do, both big and small, up until the moment that treatment is suggested – is what causes that patient to schedule the appointment or walk away.

If the mechanic has called you by name, acted courteously, stuck to all of their promises (such as being ready for you when you arrive and delivering your car at the promised time), fixed everything right the first time, and taken care of all the little things – you are more prone to believe them when a leap of faith is required. And of course dentistry is no different.

So if patients aren’t saying yes to the big things, it is time to ask yourself how you are doing on the little things.

There is one difference nowadays though, and it’s a game-changer. It’s your online reputation.

If you are questioning the need for a water pump, it’s possible that you’ll go onto Yelp or some other online rating site to check that shop out. And if half the people on there say the same mechanic ripped them off, you just may say no to the pump, or at least get a second opinion. On the other hand, if everyone says things like “honest, reasonably priced, great people to deal with, etc…” you will probably tell them to go ahead with the repair.

No question about it – your online reputation is just as important as your word of mouth in the community. It is essential to have great marks on both frontiers.

There is an incredible new way to let people know about your dental office! The good news is that it’s virtually free! The better news is that if you take advantage of this technology now, you will be able to very quickly establish yourself as THE EXPERT DENTIST in your area and basically blow your competition out of the water! Even if you are lucky enough to have the knowledge to optimize your site yourself or to find the right person to help you, there is still an inherent problem using search engine optimization to promote your practice on the web. The problem is: the only people that will find you are the ones that are actively searching and…

just happened to type in the correct keywords!

What is the likelihood? Most studies show that it is very slim. Plus, Google constantly changes their search parameters, so staying on top of this is almost impossible.

But imagine people in your area finding out about you and your practice in a different way – as they go about their normal online activities such as web browsing, emailing, shopping, social networking, and the like? If that were possible, don’t you think that would be much more of an effective marketing strategy?

It is a brand new approach, combining all of the tools that the internet has to offer which equates to new patients,

And right now your dental office can have success with this in the same way that Southwest Airlines, Marriott Hotels, Sony Electronics and many of the other big boys have! Social media marketing is actually similar. It consists of a series of things that you do online that all work in harmony to produce a specific and very predictable result, which in this case is getting people to find out about your practice, come to you as a patient, accept treatment and refer others! And remember, it will also get your current patients to accept more treatment and talk up your office like crazy!

Right at this very moment there is a gold mine out there, and if approached the correct way, YOU are going to be light years ahead of every dentist in your area!

I have no doubt that “M” Club can save a couple bucks on a box of cotton rolls, but this is certainly no revolutionary new idea to mail-order your supplies. You should stick to what you guys do best and help grow practice productivity and not “sell out” to the idea that you can “save” yourself to prosperity.
Look, I’m not hiding the fact that I’m a dealer rep, in fact I’m extreamly proud to say that I am. I’m just saying that there may be a better way to approach your clients to ask for their business than to throw out these bombs that all dealer reps are only out to rob their clients blind. Most people can see through that pretty quickly. I appreciate what you guys do for your clients to help grow their practice and that’s why I follow you on FB. It’s just poor taste to throw all dealers under the bus like this that’s all.

Thanks for your feedback. We salute you for stating your opinion. We are fans of open dialogue and confrontation and we do have a unique way of expressing ourselves; we and those that follow our writings find our comments, critiques and humor to be a breath of fresh air. Great question – we get that one a lot. There is absolutely nothing wrong with sending a man flowers – everybody loves flowers! Actually, since most men receive flowers so infrequently they have lots of impact. It will really get their co-workers curious and they will all ask who the flowers are from, creating a ton of “good press” for your practice. Of course, if you have a reputation for hitting on men or just plain don’t like the idea, you can place movie passes, a restaurant gift certificate, etc., inside of the mug. But we love flowers!

Great question! The main thing to do is keep your eyes and ears open! Every time a patient asks you or a team member a question (which happens frequently) – realize that many others in your practice and community have the same question! Things like “When does a child have their first dental visit?” or “Why doesn’t my insurance cover this?” or “Do Crest White-Strips really work?” are questions we get all the time. There are tons of them! So keep a little journal of your patient’s questions and you will never run out of topics for your emails and blogs! This Is So Random!

It seems like there is a holiday for everything these days and today is no exception. Whether you knew it or not, today is “Random Act of Kindness Day.”  So we thought it would be a great idea for the dental community as a whole to jump on this bandwagon. You can’t go wrong when it comes to making someone else feel better by being kind.

Start with your patients. Do the unexpected. Is there someone coming in today that has been struggling to make payments on their bill? They are super nice, but things aren’t that easy for them? Why not write off the balance? Can you imagine the look on your patient’s face?

What about your awesome team? Maybe order in lunch or have a rose delivered to each team member as a special token of appreciation. Have you had a good month? How about giving out $50.00 bills with the stipulation that it must be spent on themselves! Pedicure gift certificates are always a great idea, too! Be creative and make them smile!

Of course there is your family. What can you do to make them feel special today? Give them a night off and take them all out to dinner? Suggest a family game night? Surprise them!

Lastly, a random act of kindness day wouldn’t be complete without helping out a complete stranger. Pay for the person’s toll behind you or another person’s coffee at the coffee shop. Maybe tip your waitress more than she expects. Compliment someone on their outfit or hairstyle and make their day! Smile at everyone you meet.
