Coach Betty Hayden here!
August and September can sometimes be challenging months for growth in a dental practice because of the back-to-school season distractions. Offices often share with me that their schedules tend to fall apart during August and especially September.
My recommendation is to plan now for how you can attract more new patients, build relationships within the community, as well as exceed your current patients’ expectations during the month of August.
As always, my goal in sharing these ideas each month and while coaching my dental teams is to help you all stress less and have more fun at work!

Practice Management and Leadership Tips and Ideas ~
Employee Appreciation –
“Just Because Day” is August 27th. Why not surprise the team with a small gift, gift card, or treat… just because.
Office Yearly Goals –
Where are you with your production, collection, and new patient goals for 2019? What needs to change in order to successfully reach your goals?
Hygiene Continuing Care –
Send out a “Start the School Year Off with A Happy & Healthy Smile” special offer to your patients (teachers and students) that are past-due in hygiene. Have fun with it.
Marketing Tips and Ideas ~
Exceed Expectations for your current patients and the potential new patients that you engage within the community. I will give you two theme ideas:
Theme #1: Back to School with Healthy Smiles
Focus: Preventive Dental Services
What: Education, Promotion, and Special Offers
- Send a press release to local papers and news stations with “Children’s Dental Health Tips for Parents,” such as healthy snack and beverage ideas, when to visit the dentist, what-to-do in a dental emergency, brushing and flossing tips, mouthguard information, sealants information, and more.
- Facebook (live) videos sharing the aforementioned tips and ideas.
Theme #2: Patient Appreciation – S’more day is August 10th (Celebrate all month-long)
Gift Idea: S’MORES – Give-away little s’more making kits with a note attached that says: We need s’more patients like you! Thank you for your referrals! We appreciate you!
Community Tips & Ideas ~
Use your office as a community donation site for school supplies or new & gently used books to be donated to local children and/or schools in need.
Tooth bags –
Make up a little bags or boxes with a “congratulations on your lost tooth” message from your office with space to write the child’s name. Deliver these to local elementary schools for them to keep on hand for when a student loses a tooth during the school day. Both of my kids have come home with a tooth wrapped in a napkin or in a plain Ziplock bag. Why not take advantage of this opportunity to advertise your office?
Social Media Post Content Ideas to Improvement Engagement during the month of August ~
All of August: National Wellness Month
August 1-7: Simplify Your Life Week. “Simplify your life by scheduling your all-important dental health visit today.”
August 4-10 National Farmer’s Market Week
August 3 – Watermelon Day
August 6 – National Fresh Breath (Halitosis) Day
I would love to hear what you all are planning to do to make August your best month ever.
