Do You Take My PPO?
It’s a question we get all the time. How do I respond to a patient that asks “Do you participate in my PPO?” when you don’t take it?
The really scary thing is, there are major dental consulting companies out there suggesting that you lie, responding with b.s. lines like “Oh – we LOVE all insurance plans!” or “Let’s get you in for a free benefits check!” when you very well know the answer. People don’t like a bait and switch scheme, and the negative Yelp reviews for practices that give these deceptive answers will bear that out.
At Madow Success Coaching, we recommend a pretty simple principle – you gotta be an honest person! We all know that the ONLY time it’s okay to tell a fib is when your significant other asks “Do these jeans make my butt look big?” (More on this in a moment..)
So how do you answer the dreaded question, “Do you take my lousy PPO fake insurance?”
How about this?
“Well Mrs. Jones, we are an ‘UNRESTRICTED PROVIDER.’ That means that we can see you as a patient even though we’re not in network with your plan. You would pay for your treatment with us and then we will help you get reimbursed from your plan at their schedule. You may pay a little more than if you went in network, but the quality of our care and the personalized service you get at Old Mill Dental will more that make up for it!”
Will most people jump up and down, scream, and say “I’m coming in right now?” Of course not. A few people will want to come to your practice so badly that they will appoint, but most won’t. That’s okay – at least you were 100% honest. But don’t forget to get the name, phone number, and email address of the caller. Put them on your email newsletter list. Call them in six months to see how things are going. Make it very clear that if their insurance changes or they don’t like their PPO office you are there for them. And most of all – treat them like you would want to be treated by telling the truth!!
And in case you were wondering, what is the absolute WORST answer to “Do these jeans make my butt look big?”
“No – it’s not the jeans. Your butt already looks big!” Please don’t EVER say that. The Madow Center and Madow Success Coaching can definitely help your practice, but we’re not marriage counselors!
