Are you finally ready to find true happiness, success, and become a superstar?
If so, in this article we will share five things with you that we recommend you give up. And once you do, you find more happiness and success at your doorstep!
Wait a minute! We need to give up things to become happier and more successful?
That goes against everything we have ever learned about success and happiness, doesn’t it? We were always taught to adopt more “habits” and “things” to achieve greater success.
Now we need to let go?
Yes we do. And it’s really not that bad. We’re only going to ask you to give up six things. That’s right… just six. You can handle that, right?
And once you do, you will see your life change (for the better!).
So what do we need to give up? Here we go!
Give Up Trying to be Someone Else
Sure, we all have others that we admire, but when it comes down to it, trying to be just like someone else rarely works. That’s not to say there is anything wrong with observing and studying how other people do things. Honestly… we do it all the time. But in the end, you are an individual and when you try to be someone else, it will come off as fake. Be proud of who you are and just be YOU!
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Give Up Being Too Materialistic
If you are living your life and making decisions for the sole purpose of accumulating “things,” please stop it NOW! It’s going to get old really fast and when you get close to the end, you are going to take a look back and wonder why you screwed up your life chasing after stuff.
Now don’t get us wrong. We have nothing against success and wealth. But having said that, we love people that get rich “quietly” and do not feel the need to brag and show off their things. And let’s face it. After a certain point, there is only so much “stuff” that we need to own in order to survive and stay comfortable.
The two of us love to focus our lives on health, happiness and spending time with the people we love. You also know that we absolutely LOVE teaching and helping others. This is the stuff that gives both of us an incredible amount of satisfaction… much more than any shiny inanimate object ever could! That is huge success in our minds!
“The things you own end up owning you. It’s only after you lose everything that you’re free to do anything.” Chuck Palahniuk
Give Up Your Reluctance To Ask For Help
We have found that the people that can admit they don’t know everything and are very comfortable asking others for help are by far the most successful. If you feel you know more than everyone else and there is nothing more that you can learn, you are doomed.
We see this time and time again. We see it in the docs that do not take many continuing education courses because they think they know it all. Or the ones that pretend they are looking for help, but in the end do not listen and just keep doing things the same old way.
Interestingly enough, this could be why the people that take time off every November to attend TBSE to learn and hang out with other like-minded people tend to be extremely successful and well rounded.
Be strong enough to admit you don’t know everything. Take courses. Read. Ask. And don’t take asking for help as a sign of weakness.
“The strong individual is the one who asks for help when he needs it.” Rona Barrett
Give Up Trying to Be So Damn Perfect
As dentists, we strive for perfection. And when we don’t reach it, we feel we have failed. Perfectionism is based on a belief that if we do things perfectly, we can avoid failure. This is dangerous. Please understand the difference between giving something your absolute best shot and trying to be perfect. It’s huge! No human being is perfect and the day you stop trying to achieve perfection is the day you become happier and more successful. Trust us.
“Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It is a pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough – that we should try again.” Julia Cameron
Give Up Waiting For Something Lucky to Happen
It amazes us how many people (yes, even dentists) play the lottery. Somehow they believe that their lucky day is coming soon and this will be the answer to all of their problems.
And guess what?
While they are busy buying lottery tickets and waiting for that day (the day will most likely never come), they are wasting all of their time. Time that could be used productively to actually reach their goals.
So the lesson here is to focus on what you want and go after it big time. Goals are very powerful. We honestly believe you can have almost anything in life that you want. Don’t wait for the lottery. Prepare for your lucky day by going out and finding it!
“Opportunity is where you find it ….not where it finds you ” ~Old Proverb
Give Up Comparing Yourself to Others
Comparing yourself to others is extremely dangerous. You know in your heart if you are doing this, and if you are, we urge you to STOP.
Why do some people think that it’s ok to “keep score?” If you have more things than someone else than you are better? The person with the most money or stuff wins?
This will get you in a LOT of trouble if you live your life like this.
There is only one person that you need to compare yourself to and that is you. Live your life the way you want and don’t worry about how much the guy or gal next to you has. And the truth is, you can never accurately tell anyway!
Success and happiness are words that mean different things to different people.
Define your version of success and give up all the others.
“There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way.” Christopher Morley
