|This is incredibly scary….and it could happen to you!
A short time ago when we were in California doing our one-day “Love Dentistry” seminars, a dentist came up to us and showed us something that was actually shocking.
It seems that someone (he didn’t know who) launched an incredible internet smear campaign against him. And the “smearer” apparently knew quite a bit about search engine optimization, because if you Googled the word “dentist” and this person’s town, the first page was loaded with websites that were incredibly degrading and inflammatory. Are they true? Probably not. But they are certainly enough to deter a potential new patient from choosing that office – and that is really scary!
This dentist – who seemed like a heck of a nice guy – was told that to approach this problem using an attorney would cost a minimum of $15,000 and probably much more with absolutely no guarantee of success.
Think it couldn’t happen to you? Think again – because everyone is at risk these days.
Of course, treating all of your patients incredibly well, providing the best dental care possible, maintaining harmony among your staff and many other factors can go a long way. But the truth is – an internet smear campaign can happen to anyone at any time.
So what can you do?
In this case, the best defense is a good offense. You should start right now building up a great reputation online so that any attack at you will seem to be inconsequential. Lots of good reviews actually can make a few negative ones work to your advantage!
In other words, if you are deciding on where to have dinner tonight and a restaurant has twenty great reviews and one or two bad ones, the negative ones don’t seem to matter as much. Many times the opposite is true – they not only make the reviews seem more real life but they make the negative reviewers look like jerks!
So start now! Make sure that if someone Googles you, or even more importantly, is looking for a dentist in your town via Google (for example – searching for “cosmetic dentist Northern Virginia”) a whole bunch of good stuff comes up!
Ask your patients, friends and relatives for good reviews on Yelp or any of the other review sites out there.
Make sure that the search engine optimization for your website is done correctly so that your site (or sites!) dominate any Google search.
And of course, continue to provide the best treatment possible in a kind and caring environment.
NOW is the time to start getting serious about protecting your reputation online – before it’s too late!
